'What have you found?' competition winner - December

The winner of our December Veterinary Review competition is Catherine Blackman from Chestnut Veterinary Group in Ware, Hertfordshire.  Readers sent in x-rays of the most unusual object they had found in an animal, and Catherine's was a clear winner:

Chestnut Scan 1An 18 month old miniature poodle presented in November 2007. He had swallowed a fish hook while out walking and had become very distressed.

Initially an endoscopy was performed. The fish hook was stuck in his oesophagus and could be felt just caudal to his larynx.

Next radiography was performed. On both the VD and lateral views a three pronged barbed fish hook could be seen. A ventral oesophagotomy was performed. One of the barbs had penetrated the oesophageal wall. This was cut off and removed separately from the rest of the hook and wire.

Recovery was uneventful.
