'What have you found?' competition winner - April
'Fancy a Light Lunch?'
The winner of our Veterinary Review competition is Jo Wyatt, Head Nurse at Animed Veterinary Hospital & Equine Unit in Southampton. Readers sent in case studies of the most unusual object found in an animal and Jo's was a clear winner:
A ten year old six foot long North American Bull snake was presented at the hospital. His owner had noticed an abnormal lump for approximately one month. Animed's veterinary surgeon, Caroline Coombs, advised further investigation and the 'glowa' constricotr was admitted for radiography. When the x-ray was developed the light dawned. The snake had taken a shine to a 25 watt candle bulb that was used in his vivarium to provide heat and light - he had consumed it!
An exploratory operation was performed - the bulb was removed and remarkably still worked. Happily the snake made a dazzling recovery.
Here's Jo and here colleagues with their prize Kodak digital camera. Details of the June competition can be found in the next news article and the June issue of Veterinary Review.
